ELIZABETH SAWINSKI | SVP + DIRECTOR OF CREATIVE SERVICES + GREAT DANE FOSTER MOM
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH GREAT DANE RESCUE?
I always wanted a big spotted dog like Picasso’s Dalmatians and started my dog family with a Dalmatian, Nanner, and a spotted Great Dane, Vincent. Vincent did better in a pack, so after we lost Nanner, I began fostering so he would have a friend. Sadly, there are lots of Great Danes in rescue because people don’t anticipate the demands of their size.
WERE ANY SPECIAL SKILLS NEEDED?
Mainly a heart for the breed. I fell in love with them after having one with issues – he was a gentle giant. I enjoy working with them and training them. They don’t live particularly long, so we try to give them their best life.
WHAT IMPACT DID FOSTERING/ADOPTING HAVE ON YOUR FAMILY?
Over the last 15 years, we have fostered 6 and adopted 2 and “special ordered” 2 from reputable breeders. We had to be creative and work together to care for them. This especially taught our daughter responsibility. It was difficult to say goodbye as they left for their forever homes, but we still keep up with the adoptive families. I love seeing families. I love seeing the lives they have at their furever homes on social media!
